Elon Musk won't buy Twitter? Behind the scenes.
On Friday, financial markets were hit with news of Elon Musk abandoning the idea of Twitter (TWTR.US) purchase. The question of whether this is his final decision, 开设模拟账户 or just a game aimed at lowering the transaction price, remains open, at least for the time being. In order for investors to get a clue on what could come next, it is worth getting to know the backstage of 开设模拟账户 one of the most media-covered transactions in recent months.
It started as usual, innocently .

Elon “Twitter” Musk
April 4 this year greeted investors from overseas with euphoria on Twitter shares, which grew by almost 开设模拟账户 28% in the pre-session market. The reason was the information about the purchase of a significant stake in the company by an eccentric billionaire, also called a visionary by some, Elon Musk. After the transaction, Musk owned 9.2% of the company's shares, which, according to Bloomberg data, was four times the size of the 2.25% held by 开设模拟账户 Twitter founder Jack Dorsey. At that time, the value of Musk's Twitter shareholding was 2.89 billion USD. The 开设模拟账户 market speculated that the deal could only be a prelude to taking over the entire platform. As it turned out later, he was right.
There was only one "but" .
"Bots of contention"
In mid-April, Elon Musk made an offer to buy back all Twitter shares at 54.2 USD per share. As a result, the transaction was worth 44 billion USD. Twitter's management originally saw this as an attempted hostile takeover, but an agreement was reached and a final agreement was made with the management on April 25 for the purchase of Twitter. At the end of 开设模拟账户 April, press reports appeared according to which Musk wants to introduce fees for using the ad-free platform. He also declared a desire to restore the account of former US President Donald Trump, which was banned after the elections in autumn 开设模拟账户 2020. As it turned out later, something completely different led to the failure of one of the most famous transactions 开设模拟账户 on the M&A market. Musk saw great potential on the social media platform that could be unlocked if spam bots were defeated. And it was this factor that turned out to be a bone (or rather a bot) of contention.开设模拟账户
Elon Musk expected evidence that Twitter bots accounted for less than 5% of all accounts. In his opinion, the greater number of fake accounts significantly reduces the profitability of the company, which in turn reduces its value. However, no 开设模拟账户 one expected what was to come on July 8 this year. On Friday, Tesla's boss informed the world that he was withdrawing from the Twitter takeover deal, as the reason it failed to meet its contractual obligations, according to 开设模拟账户 which the company did not provide the required information on the number of fake accounts and spam.
Twitter's management 开设模拟账户 board did not leave this information unnoticed. Bret Taylor, Twitter's CEO, issued a statement according to which his company intends to take legal action with Musk in order to force him to comply with the terms of the contract and takeover Twitter. Elon Musk, on his Twitter account (sic!) commented on this statement in his own style - publishing 开设模拟账户 a meaningful graphic / meme:

Both Musk and Twitter representatives may not be amused, as both sides of the would-be deal agreed to pay out up to a billion dollars in certain circumstances. As of 13:20, Twitter shares (TWTR.US) in pre-trading quotes are losing 6.85% and are trading at 34.29 USD per share.
Time will tell if the above battle ended in a fixed-price takeover of 54.20 USD per share, 开设模拟账户 at a lower price, or one of the most media disappointments in history.
Asian stocks rebound, Turkish lira slides 开设模拟账户 on US threat
Mario Draghi made investors’ day on Tuesday as he explicitly admitted that the ECB could both cut rates further and resume its asset purchase programme if economic growth did not rebound. Such comments were read by market participants as a hint the ECB will have to do something soon because the economic outlook does not seem to improve. On top of that, we have a lot of outside risks to this outlook predominantly from the trade front as 开设模拟账户 well as Brexit. Upbeat sentiment seen in Europe yesterday was also present in the United States and today in Asia. The Hang Seng is rising 2.3% a while before the close whereas the Shanghai Composite (CHNComp) is moving up 1.4% and the Japanese NIKKEI (JAP225) is climbing 1.8%. Let us also recall that Mario Draghi and his 开设模拟账户 speech was not the sole reason for a widespread rebound in equity markets globally.
The second one came from Donald Trump who confirmed a meeting with Xi Jinping in Japan later this month. Earlier it was uncertain whether both meet during a G20 meeting in June. However, all of that looks like a game as Trump’s notion changes from day to day, for example he said overnight that the US would have a great deal with China or no deal at all. Moreover, one may be almost certain an exchange rate between the US and the Eurozone will be a pivotal element in current frictions between the two countries. Trump blamed Draghi for talking the euro down against the US dollar which could be an excuse to threaten the euro area tariffs on cars and parts. What’s more, Trump has pressured Jerome Powell recently to cut rates immediately in order to help the economy by weakening the greenback. However, this does not look as easy as it seems. Keep in mind that market participants have already priced in a 开设模拟账户 rate cut in the US by September, hence weakening the US dollar could not be an easy task. It appears that the Fed could be able to do so only if it presents dovish forward guidance - let’s be true 开设模拟账户 the Fed does not have too many reasons to change the course of the current policy stance.

Major currencies stay calm
Although sentiment across equity markets looks rosy, market participants are much less confident in case currencies. During Asian 开设模拟账户 trading we have not had a clear direction there with slight appreciation of the Japanese yen. In terms of macroeconomic data we were offered first quarter current account from New Zealand showing a deficit of 3.6% of GDP, 开设模拟账户 a slight improvement compared to a deficit of 3.8% of GDP in the final three months of 2018. In addition to that we got a release on foreign trade from Japan for May bringing a 7.8% YoY decline 开设模拟账户 in exports and a 1.5% YoY decline in imports. The detailed numbers showed exports to the US rose 3.开设模拟账户 开设模拟账户 3% YoY while exports to China dwindled 9.7% YoY. Looking beyond major currencies one needs to focus on the Turkish lira being 0.8% down against the US dollar this morning. Its weakness came after Bloomberg comments regarding possible 开设模拟账户 new US sanctions on Turkey on the back of a purchase of Russian missile defense system by Turkey.
The USDTRY shot up on the news that Turkey could face new sanctions from the US. The move has abated to some extent but the TRY remains under pressure anyway. Source: xStation5

Stocks attempt to recover recent declines
There’s been a strong rally in stock markets this morning with the FTSE 开设模拟账户 100 gaining over 100 points as investors seek to recover from the recent declines. The benchmark has moved up to its highest level in 3 weeks on the back of this, but is still set to post a large monthly decline. The pound is also in an upbeat mood, gaining across the board as it too seeks to recoup some recent losses.

Even after this morning’s gains global equity markets are left licking their wounds after a brutal month, with the MSCI world equity index still down over 8% for October and on track for its worst month since 2012. Ongoing US-Chinese trade tensions, slowing global growth 开设模拟账户 开设模拟账户 and rising US interest rates all have contributed to the sell-off and the question going forward now is whether the worst of it is over or if there’s another wave of selling into year-end. The recent stabilisation is a pleasing development at least and with positive seasonality often seen in US stocks following the Midterms this latest rise could yet be more than a dead cat bounce and may well lead to a sustained recovery.
Facebook called to open 开设模拟账户 开设模拟账户 开设模拟账户 higher after mixed earnings update
There’s been some volatile after hours trade in Facebook shares following the firm’s latest trading update, with an initial swoon being bought and the stock is now called to open higher by around 3% after being down as much as 5% yesterday evening. The moves are a reflection of what could be described as a mixed earnings release, with earnings per share smashing forecasts but any over optimism was tempered by a smaller than expected 开设模拟账户 rise in daily active users and a small miss in revenues. Taking a step back the results are fairly solid 开设模拟账户 on the whole and while it looks like rapid growth for the tech giant may be becoming a thing of yesteryear, at least the business is consolidating and generating decent profits. The previous update back in July was met with a bloodbath as the stock plunged 20% after hours, and while the stock has been whippy this time out, it 开设模拟账户 开设模拟账户 开设模拟账户 is expected to be more sanguine when it opens at 1:30 this afternoon.
